Community Rider

The Community Rider is a cost-effective, community transportation service for everyone. We cover East Hants and surrounding areas, including Fall River and Waverley. Need a ride? Call us for a quote.

Our service was originally set up to breakdown one of the biggest barriers to education: getting to class. Following the success of this venture, the service has grown exponentially to help people of all ages in our communities overcome transportation barriers. Passengers use the Community Rider to get to medical appointments, job interviews, classes and skills training, grocery shopping, personal errands as well as social events, getting together with friends and family, sporting and after school activities.

Social isolation is a real and growing problem in rural areas, which can lead to mental health issues. Transportation to services and social activities helps people remain engaged in their community. We have a fleet of 4 vehicles, two which are wheelchair accessible. In addition to these vehicles, we are supported by a group of committed and trained volunteers who utilize their personal vehicles.

Our passengers are your neighbours. They are seniors, students, families, people who face transportation challenges from simply buying their groceries to getting to medical appointments, as well as doing important personal errands such as banking. If you live or work in our communities, the Community Rider is there for you.

It is a legal requirement for all our passengers to wear the seatbelt restraints in our vehicles.  If for some reason you cannot wear a seatbelt, please provide a letter from your doctor.  If you are using a wheelchair, there is also legislation we must follow regarding transportation of wheelchairs and scooters.   Please note the following information as we want to ensure we transport all our clients as safely as possible:

Service may be cancelled or rescheduled by phone or in person before a driver is dispatched. Late cancellation will result in a cancellation fee determined by EHCR.

To book or cancel your ride call: 902-883-4716

We will decide based on weather forecasts, travel conditions and the advice of our drivers if and when we should cancel service. Our priority is getting our passengers to their destinations safely. If the weather is bad or if you are unsure if the service might be cancelled, please call 902-883-4716. If you feel unsafe and choose not to travel, please provide us with as much notice as possible to save the driver from travelling for no reason and incurring a charge.

How are we different?

  • Rides are charged per person, per one-way drive.
  • We operate five days a week, but can sometimes accommodate requests outside operating hours.
  • We telephone our passengers to confirm their ride and tell them the time they will be picked up.
  • Our drivers are kind and compassionate and have a good driving record.
  • Our drivers will take passengers to their destination safely and, if requested, will walk with them to the clinic or department they need and wait for them at the appointment location or a pre-arrange meeting place.
  • Business cards can be provided to passengers to give to medical staff to call their driver when the appointment is complete.
  • We invoice monthly and can do direct invoicing if you have an agent that pays for your transportation.
