Employment Opportunity: Adult Education Instructor

The East Hants Community Learning Association is a registered charitable organization that offers free adult and family literacy programs.  We are recruiting an experienced Instructor to deliver our programs.  The successful candidate will work under the direction of the Executive Director, closely with other staff and community partners, and will follow good practice principles of adult education. 

 The successful candidate will be responsible for the effective delivery of a variety of adult learning programs including: CAEC (formerly GED), Digital Literacy, community interest programs, the Adult Learning Program curricula, family literacy programs/events, essential and employability skills, and basic English communication.

The successful candidate will provide instruction that is interesting and relevant to participants, develops critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and will focus on opportunities to grow our learner base in East Hants and surrounding communities. Basic computer instruction in a variety of applications will be a required instructional skill.  Previous experience in an EAL setting would be considered an asset.

The EHCLA Instructor position is a full-time, contract position from September 2024 until June 2025 with a potential for renewal.  The position offers a starting salary of $26.80 per hour, a pension matching program, and extended health benefits.

 

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assess participants using a variety of tools and strategies, and work with participants to prepare individualized learning plans
  • Prepare and deliver daytime and evening classroom instruction using adult-based and culturally relevant materials to ensure participants meet their personal learning goals
  • Prepare learners to complete the Canadian Adult Education Credential – CAEC (formerly GED)
  • Evaluate participants’ progress on an ongoing basis
    • Ensure participants’ documents, learning plans, attendance and other related records are maintained and kept confidential
  • As required: attend meetings of the organization, prepare monthly and other reports, and attend other activities of EHCLA
  • Attend professional development opportunities as required
  • Provide learning support during various program workshops
  • Maintain accurate and up to date documentation
  • Work closely with other EHCLA staff, instructors, volunteers, partners, and clients
  • Ensure confidentiality, respect and professionalism in all matters

 

Qualifications

University degree, preferably in Education, OR an equivalent combination of education and instructional experience working with adults in an educational setting

  • completion of the Nova Scotia Practitioner Training Certification Program would be an asset and will be required upon hiring
  • excellent organizational and communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Able to work in a multi-level classroom environment
  • Experience working with newcomers or within an English Language training environment would be considered an asset
  • Willing to learn and grow with the needs of our community and organization
